If there's one thing the Red Sox need to add to their lineup this offseason, it's power.

Boston ranked 26th among all MLB teams — and third-to-last among squads that made the postseason — in home runs this past season, hitting 163 as a unit with Willson Contreras' 27 leading the way. Against the Yankees in the AL Wild Card series, the Red Sox had just four extra-base hits over two games.

There are a number of names who could be available, whether through free agency or via trade, that Craig Breslow could pursue. One of them is a potential boom-or-bust candidate: Japanese slugger Teruaki Sato, who is seeking a move to MLB through the posting system.

Here's what to know about Sato, a triple-crown winner in Japan's Central League, and why he could be a fit in Boston.

Sato, who plays for the Hanshin Tigers of the Central League in Japan, has been seeking a move to MLB this offseason. As of Monday, his Tigers squad made it official, announcing that Sato would be posted to MLB teams this offseason, per MLB Trade Rumors.

He won the Triple Crown in the Central League, also claiming MVP honors, making him a fascinating potential addition for an MLB franchise this offseason. "At least five" teams have already shown interest in Sato, per MLB Trade Rumors , and in a weaker offensive free-agent class, he could be one of the top available bats.

Sato, 27, is still relatively young and can play third base or right field. It's his bat, however, that would be an asset, as he's been one of the best hitters in Nippon Professional Baseball over the last two seasons. In 2026, he had a .306/.383/.609 slash line with 39 homers and 106 RBI, winning the Triple Crown.

Sato wouldn't officially be posted "until some time after the NPB season is over," per MLB Trade Rumors. He would have 45 days to sign with an MLB team after being posted, a timeline that could be impacted by a potential lockout — if he didn't have a contract by Dec. 1, his timeline would pick up where it left off after a lockout ends. If Sato didn't have a contract by the end of the 45-day period, he would return to the Central League in 2027.

After also playing for Japan in the 2026 World Baseball Classic, Sato could join the likes of Shohei Ohtani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Seiya Suzuki, Shota Imanga, Roki Sasaki, Munetaka Murakami, Kazuma Okamoto and more Japanese stars to join MLB in recent years.

It's no guarantee that Sato will decide to join MLB, but it appears more likely than not that he'll land a free-agent deal this offseason, especially considering the thin market for bats. Considering Boston has a clear need for a slugger, it wouldn't be surprising to see Breslow kick the tires on adding Sato.

Under Breslow, the Red Sox have proven willing to pursue top Japan talent, signing Masataka Yoshida to a five-year deal in 2023. That deal has not panned out as anticipated, with Yoshida hitting 34 home runs over four seasons, but perhaps Breslow views Sato differently as a final piece to Boston's lineup, needing some power.

In a best-case scenario, Murakami is an example for teams to be encouraged about when considering Sato, a high-strikeout slugger from Japan coming to MLB. After signing with the White Sox last offseason, Murakami hit 35 home runs on a resurgent Chicago team that returned to the postseason, although he also hit .207 with 196 strikeouts.

With Jarren Duran facing an uncertain future in Boston, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Red Sox pursue a slugger — either at DH or in the outfield — to pair with Ceddanne Rafaela, Wilyer Abreu and Roman Anthony. Sato would also be capable of playing third base, where Curtis Mead is currently projected to start in 2027.

He may not be a seamless fit, and the strikeout issues could be a red flag, but there's reason to believe Sato could succeed in Boston. At the very least, he's one of few power bats who could be available, something the Red Sox need.
