The New York Yankees definitely have a couple of holes to fill in their infield this winter, as they have openings at both second base and potentially third.

Anthony Volpe is currently slotted in as the starting second baseman, and Ryan McMahon is over at the hot corner. Chances are, the Yankees will make a change at one of those two spots, at least, in the coming months.

On that note, Joel Sherman of The New York Post has reported that the Yankees have previously expressed interest in Kansas City Royals second baseman Michael Massey.

Massey is coming off of a 2026 campaign in which he slashed .272/.303/.428 with 13 home runs and 50 RBI over 452 plate appearances.

He's a lefty who can hit southpaws, and considering he is a pull hitter, his bat could end up working at Yankee Stadium.

It should also be noted that Massey is a tremendous defender, having posted five defensive runs saved and 11 outs above average at second base in 2026.

The 28-year-old is under team control through 2028, so New York would be able to have him for a couple of seasons if it does, in fact, trade for him.

Of course, there are some concerns with Massey.

He owns a lifetime .688 OPS and is two years removed from posting a .581 OPS in 77 games, so his bat has bene rather inconsistent. His lifetime 4.5 percent walk rate is also very unappealing.

Also, the cost to acquire Massey might be a bit more than the Yankees would desire given the fact that he is still two years away from free agency.

And is he really any better than Volpe ?

Volpe is a good defender with similar offensive stats, and while he only hit two homers across 246 trips to the dish in 2026, he has historically had more pop than Massey, having hit 21 and 19 long balls in separate campaigns.

I suppose the Yankees could always try sliding one of Massey or Volpe over to third, but then New York would be severely lacking power in the infield.

Massey is a decent piece and is probably best served as a utility player rather than a starter, but the Yanks already have that in both Volpe and Jose Caballero .

If the Yankees are going to try and swing a trade for someone, they should absolutely aim much higher than Massey.
