Most Popular Hats in New Zealand & Australia
posted by u/SkubenDoski · 2026-11-01 05:18 UTC
I've been waiting for the end of the season to post this as this is definitely off-season content.
Early in the pandemic season, I began counting every baseball hat I saw in an attempt to find out which hats are most popular in this corner of the world. Being one of New Zealand's biggest baseball fans, I took it upon myself and to do the research and hopefully come up with some interesting and conclusive data.
I saw my 5000th hat this year and decided to share my findings.
Baseball is not very big here in NZ so any hat is almost always a fashion choice rather than support for a particular team. I knew the Yankees and Dodgers would be top two but the rest were up for debate.
In every sporting apparel store, particularly in New Zealand, there are usually the same 5/6 teams available on hats in a range of different colours. It might seem outrageous but even in rivals colours! ... For example, a red and black Yankees, or a blue Boston hat wouldn't be crazy to see. Most people here I would assume can't even name three different MLB teams.
If you have any questions I'll be happy to answer.

I'm mildly insulted that my Commonwealth cousins aren't supporting the Jays more.

Honestly they are the most available more than anything

I've never seen them for sale! See more Vancouver Canucks caps

It’s all fashion anyways, I wouldnt be suprised if Pittsburgh and Boston B can be associated with something over there.

The NY and LA logo hats have transcended baseball. Do the people wearing them know it’s a Yankees or Dodgers hat? In many cases, no.

I know people in Canada who wear LA/NY for the logos, not the team. No love for the Jays?

Yeah I hate the Yankees but I can’t deny it’s a great hat.

The jays have a sweet hat too though.

💯 you see those damn things everywhere. They’re for sale across the globe everywhere. People think they wear an LA hat or a New York hat. They have no idea it’s a Dodgers or Yankees cap. I’m not even sure all the Yankees or Dodgers hats have mlb logo on them.

Yup. I asked a guy wearing a Dodgers hat if he’d been following the post season, and all I got was a “Nope, I don’t do baseball.”

I get asked this all the time!
No, I am a real live Dodger fan and have been since I was a kid! This hat supports the team!
It has occured to me, I probably have pointed out a few hats, without realization they weren't a fan

Ya it's weird, for other sports they are usually a fan. I just got into baseball last year and I quickly realized to not assume anyone wearing an MLB hat even knows they're wearing a baseball team's hat. I usually don't even ask, especially for Yankees or Dodgers hats

Wtf, 13 Marlins hats? I could go to any other state in AMERICA and not see 13 Marlins hats. Somebody get these Aussies and Kiwis tickets to LoanDepot, I'm tired of seeing the same 20 faces there

It probably has more to do with Miami than the Marlins
18. u/NEUTRONonmyPINKY · 2026-11-01 15:31 UTC
I understand why no one wants the Miami Marlins hat. Absolute trash compared to the Florida Marlins hat. Sorry still bitter

Nah you're right though

I bet if you look at a lot of countries or big cities outside of the US the distribution would be relatively the same. Speaking from personal anecdote on visiting Switzerland and Italy
