Bichette exercises $42M option to stay with Mets

Gee, shock me he would do this. And a reminder:
Bichette's $42 million salary for 2027 is one of the six most expensive in the majors. He also holds a $42 million player option for 2028.
So, what will he do a year from now, Steve Cohen?
Per the story, he got better the second half of the year last year, but he still didn't get that good.
Bichette, who arrived with a .294 batting average and .806 OPS for his career, rebounded over the final four months of the regular season, batting .284 with 13 home runs and a .772 OPS in 101 games, while improving his defense at his new position.
In other words, he's not seven Steve Austins.

He’s doing what most people would in the situation. Take the $ and run while he can. Then he will snap up a long term much lower deal and ride out his career

This, exactly. It’s hard to say no to that kind of money.

Bo Bichette is the slowest guy in mlb. He doesn’t even know where they keep treadmill. He never runs 😂⚾️

There were 100 slower players in MLB with a minimum of 10 opportunities but who cares about actual facts vs bogus narratives.

Fun Fact: Pete Alonso signed for $31M

The Pete thing wasn't even a money thing. They just convinced themselves that he wasn't actually good, which is far more embarrassing

As a Phillies fan, I didn’t think twice last off season about trying to sign Alonso. But, after this season I realized that he would have been a lot of what the Phillies needed. Should have been a no brainer move for them instead of trying to go after Bichette

I agree Alonso’s RH SLG is exactly what the Phillies lineup lacked. But if they went after Alonso they would have not been been able to sign Schwarber which would have been a negative when you compare him to Alonso imo. No shade to Pete he’s great but Kyle is better.

They went after Bichette after signing Schwarber.. who would have been more expensive than Alonso. So how would they not have been able to sign him?

You’re not wrong with the timing but the team obviously doesn’t want Harper to be in the OF for a majority of the season for his long-term health. So after they signed Schwarber they had no where to play Alonso. Where with Bichette they would have moved Bohm or had no qualms about sitting Alec on the bench.

In hindsight, it will still the no brainer move. Moving Harper to the OF for Alonso would have been far more worth it than when they ended up moving him for Luis Arraez.
And remember, I said that I had no desire to sign Alonso last off season.

I don’t think Harper moving back to the outfield was ever a thought until mid season

No way he was getting that in FA after last year, makes sense

Bichette had an OPS of 0.628 in July. And an OPS of 0.707 in September.
His second half mostly sucked. He was ok in August but not 42 million level elite (0.850 ops, wow). Not even close

Last year his value per 1 WAR was at 60 million. As bad as Vlad was his value was slightly over 36.5 million per WAR and he's the main guy people talk about being overpaid in 2026.

I’d take him over Vlad Jr and a lot of other players last year.

You’re not wrong from an offensive stat perspective. Vladdy was in the running for a gold glove again this year, though.
