Jeffers, more than most guys on the list, was one we talked about a lot. Tim Dierkes is right there with you, and Darragh thought Anthony and I were pretty high coming in around 4/72 as well. I do have more worry of being off by a wide margin with Jeffers more so than most of the established MLB free agents.
(On the NPB/KBO guys, it’s a crapshoot; who knows? I try to talk to big league scouts on these guys every year, but even teams will acknowledge off record that it’s impossible to predict with any real certainty. We try our best to get a feel for how interesting the NPB/KBO free agents are, but it only takes one team to go completely bananas on a free agent to blow industry expectations out of the water. We saw that on Yoshida in Boston, for instance.)
It’s hard to ignore how similar Jeffers’ offensive profile is to Contreras, however, and Jeffers is pretty good with ABS challenges and hits lefties well at a time when the league is remarkably feeble against them.
There are a few predictions on this list that we know we’re going to be out on an island with. Jeffers is definitely one. But a 29-year-old (30 next June) catcher who’s 20%-ish better than average at the plate — when the standard catcher is 10% worse — is compelling. We try not to overcorrect for agencies, but Boras Corp does have a knack for getting some eye-popping deals (also some big-time whiffs, granted).
I would say on most free agent predictions at MLBTR, we can usually see a case where the guy signs for a bit more, but we can’t get there to predict it. I think we’re pretty close to the top end of what’s realistic for Jeffers, but we went with it anyhow. That might end up biting us, but the deliberation process was pretty good. One of my last questions to the group today before publishing was whether anyone wanted to make a last-minute case to back down Jeffers, and we agreed to just stick with it.
