Earlier this week, we learned that the Seattle Mariners are interested in Jason Kanzler for their managerial opening .
After moving on from manager Dan Wilson at the end of a 76-86 season, the M's are seeking their third manager since 2016. Kanzler does not have prior managerial experience, but he has been in a variety of positions within an organizaiton.
He was a minor league and major league hitting coach with the Houston Astros, and he's currently the farm director for the Chicago Cubs. He's 36 years old, so he brings a mix of youth and experience to the table and we covered some of the pros and cons around his candidacy here .
We've spoken about the importance of this managerial hire to the future of the Mariners, and ESPN MLB Insider Buster Olney has told us about the importance of hiring a manager with experience .
That said, we went back to Olney on Thursday's 'Refuse to Lose Territory' podcast and asked how he feels about someone with Kanzler's resume being in the mix for the job alongside Joe Espada and Rocco Baldelli.
"So there certainly have been people who've had this sort of success that he's had, sort of moving from one job to another and then going through player development. Andy Green, for example, who is the Mets manager. He sort of moved in different roles, and he was working in the Mets front office before he became the interim manager. And then he took the job.
I mean, going way back, Bobby Cox of the Braves, like, he went into the front office for a time after initially managing and probably honed some of his player evaluation skills, came back out and became a Hall of Fame manager.
Look, my general thought about the Mariners and where they are right now and why they need experience is whoever that manager is. If you have someone who doesn't have experience, they have to swim upstream against the perception with the fans and with some players that they are essentially going to do the bidding of the front office. That's the reality...
And that's the thing, is that if you have an experienced manager, a David Ross, a (Rocco) Baldelli, a Joe Espada, I think there's a, the manager starts out with the perception that he's his own person because he has his own experiences. And I think that's a good thing."
The Mariners have said there's no rush in terms of getting a manager hired, but other reports have indicated that they want to have a hire done by Halloween, which is Oct. 31. While getting it right is the most important thing, the M's are up against the probable lockout, which will impact the ability for a new manager to help establish a new culture. That's one reason why hitting the Oct. 31 reported deadline could be a good thing for the M's.
The World Series begins on Friday night with the Milwaukee Brewers hosting the Tampa Bay Rays at 5 p.m. PT. Former Mariners Jake Bauers (Brewers) and Ben Williamson (Rays) are on the World Series rosters for their respective teams.
Neither team has ever won a World Series title.
