I doubt anyone will per season but if he can go out and sign for 2/$30M or 3/$42M or something he’s better off opting out. He’s 34, it’s probably his last multi-year contract opportunity.
Ofc if he signs for 1/$10M two-weeks into Spring Training, which at least feels like it’s in the realm of realistic outcomes, it’ll be a mistake, but I get it. He’s basically coming off the 3rd best season at the plate he’s ever had and that’s after a slow March/April. From May 1 on, he hit .238/.327/.525 with 24 HR and a 136 wRC+. He had a 137 wRC+ in the second half. He’s in the same tier of hitter as Suzuki but will be a lot cheaper. More flaws, ofc, being a platoon bat that can’t play defense, but he’ll have plenty of suitors this offseason, and should be able to snag 2/$30 from someone who misses out on the top hitters of the class.
